正面回应：维多利亚大学就校刊侮辱中国人一事道歉

维多利亚大学校刊不久前因为刊登一则侮辱中国人的内容引起了在新西兰的广大华人强烈反应。经过中国大使馆和在校学生及学生会的多方努力，及本网站的全方位报道。终于迫使该校管理高层对校刊杂志施压，做出了令人较为满意的道歉。应不少华人朋友的要求，现在将几篇道歉信整理如下：

    以下是维多利亚大学发出的声明：

    维大学生杂志SALIENT 与 惠灵顿维多利亚大学

    维多利亚大学管理高层就由学生独立出版的杂志Salient冒犯到华人一事深表歉意。

    维大学生会（VUW Students’ Association）是由学生组成的独立机构，不受维多利亚大学管理。 Salient杂志虽然由学生会出版， 但根据合约，杂志编辑和维大学生会也是相对独立的，所以杂志出版的内容并不代表其学生会的立场，也不受学生会管理。

    有些人可能会认为即使杂志不属于维大管理，但也应该对此作出约束和回应。 其实， 维大公共事务部主管在得知此事后，已于五月五日向Salient的编辑以及维大学生会会长对于其杂志上的内容表示了强烈的谴责。维大管理高层与各界一样对Salient 所出版的讽刺性内容深表关注。维大学生会主席已经向中国驻新西兰大使发出了正式的道歉信 （请阅读公共事务部给Salient编辑的信）。Salient的编辑亦已通知维大管理层他们将会在新一期的杂志上登出道歉信（请阅读编辑的公开道歉信）。

Salient and Victoria University of Wellington
  
Victoria University management have expressed deep regret that the independent magazine published by students has given offence to Chinese people.  Victoria University does not control the students' association (VUWSA) who are the owners of the magazine, Salient.  VUWSA does not control the information published by Salient, because the Editor is independent of VUWSA.  Some people may think that Victoria University should do something about Salient, even though it has no control over it.  On Friday 5 May, Victoria University's Director of Public Affairs wrote to the Editor of Salient and the President of VUWSA to express the University's condemnation of the Salient information.  Victoria University shares the concerns expressed by others about the offensiveness of the Salient information.  The President of VUWSA has sent an apology to the Chinese Ambassador.  Copies of these letters are below:  The Editor of Salient has told Victoria University that a new apology will appear in the next issue of Salient.

    你们在4月24  日出版的Salient杂志上，把“中国人”指为“我们应提防的前五类物种之一”之一。　这实在是一个缺乏思考的，带种族歧视和人身攻击的评论，并导致了很多学生，校友以及大学里面其他团体的不满和愤恨。

    如果这篇评论中的所指的“我们”，是暗指维大学生的话，我相信学生们也是绝不会同意的。我相信作者对这篇不恰当的评论已经作出了深刻的反省。作为编辑的你，应联同学生会在杂志上作出正式的道歉，作为对现状的补救。

Subject: Letter to the Editor

Dear James
In the Top 5 on 24 April Salient refers to "The Chinese" as one of the "Species we should be wary of". It is a thoughtless, offensive and indeed, racist, statement that has led to much hurt and resentment by students, alumni and other members of the University community. It is objectionable that Victoria University of Wellington students, presumably the "we" to which the Top 5 refers, should be implicated in this remark. Presumably the author of this statement has had time to reflect on the inappropriate nature of that comment. A full apology should be made by the Victoria University of Wellington Students' Association which publishes Salient, and yourself, as Editor, to begin to remedy the situation.

    维多利亚大学学生会对在4月24 日学生杂志Salient， 2006年第7期上作出的评论深表歉意。Salient 学生杂志由维大学生会所出版，但根据Salient的合同，该杂志拥有独立的编辑权。杂志中这篇关于对中国人的评论已经引起了很多人极大的不满，学生会认为应该对此事作出回应。 把“中国人”指为“应提防的前五类物种之一”，Salient的本意是把这作为一个幽默，而不是作出冒犯和讽刺。然而学生会认为这个评论是极其不恰当而且带排外性质的，也意识到这篇评论已经引起了中国学生以及在惠灵顿的中国团体的极大不满。我们认为这篇评论是品位极其差劣并难以容忍的。

The Victoria University of Wellington Students Association would like to apologies for comments in Issue 7 of Salient 2006 published on 24th of April. Salient is the magazine published by VUWSA, however under the Salient charter it is given editorial independence. The recent comments about Chinese in this publication have caused considerable offence therefore VUWSA feels the need to respond. In naming Chinese as one of the ‘Top 5 Species to be wary of’ we believe Salient were trying to be funny rather than aiming to cause offense. However VUWSA believes that the comments made in Salient were xenophobic and inappropriate and we are aware that they have caused offense to Chinese Students and the Chinese community in Wellington generally. The comments we believe were in poor taste and VUWSA in no way condones them.
