JIE GAO received letters offering bags of cash from fourcompeting universities a day after she learned her universitiesentrance score was 99.95.
The former North Sydney Girls High student was offered a $10,000annual scholarship by the University of Sydney and the Universityof NSW, a $4000 annual scholarship from Macquarie University and a$13,000 scholarship - funded by business - to attend the Universityof Technology, Sydney.
It is part of the annual ritual of universities targeting thestate's elite HSC performers - using all the tricks of the publicrelations trade, including Christmas cards, Devonshire teas andthousands of dollars in cash inducements.
With so many options, Jie Gao said she would make her decisionaccording to which university and course she preferred.
"If you don't have any preference, then obviously the money willbecome a factor, but if it's $1000, $2000 a year, very few studentswould be swayed by that," she said.
The race for the top began the day after students received theiruniversities admission index scores late December.
The University of NSW and Sydney University last week hostedbreakfasts and receptions for students who scored 99.9 and above, where they were addressed by the vice-chancellors and given anopportunity to meet the faculty deans.
Sydney and NSW are neck-and-neck for the cash inducements theyoffer students, both having raised their top academic scholarshipslast year to $10,000 a year - up to $50,000 in total.
Sydney University's Outstanding Achievement Awards, are forthose who have scored 99.95 or 100 on their universities admissionindex. Thousands of other scholarships are awarded throughindividual faculties.
At UNSW the top Scientia scholarship is automatically offered tostudents who have listed the university as a preferred studydestination and achieve 99.9 or above. About 25 are given out eachyear.
Even good performers are targeted. Tim Scriven, from TerrigalHigh, received an index of 88.2. He received a Christmas card and apostcard from Sydney University and the Australian NationalUniversity even before he knew his result.
He has decided he wants to do a bachelor of arts, majoring inphilosophy, at Sydney. He hopes to do an MA and PhD and become aphilosophy lecturer.
"I've been studying philosophy as a hobby for a year now. I madeup my mind a while ago," he said.
